About Michelle

With over 25 years in the construction industry, Michelle Derkx-Alvarez brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for empowering others. Her career began in the roofing industry, where she installed sheet metal and prepped roofs for solar. Over the years, she expanded her expertise through hands-on fieldwork, estimating, site supervision, and project management.

Today, Michelle works in business development for a general contractor specializing in the public works sector, where she builds meaningful partnerships and fosters growth across communities.

Beyond construction, Michelle has also spent many years fueling another passion—strength and conditioning. She has coached competitive jiu-jitsu athletes and professional mixed martial artists, helping them develop both physical and mental resilience.
Whether in construction or the martial arts, Michelle has always held a special place in her heart for lifting women up, empowering them to be confident, to silence the naysayers, and to never settle for less than they deserve.

An advocate for animals as well as people, Michelle dedicates her time as a foster for several animal rescues—providing care, love, and a safe home for those left behind or forgotten.

Becoming a Director on the Board of WISH is, for Michelle, a dream come true. “I want to surround myself with strong women and be a mentor for those just starting in the industry,” she says. “No matter how far we’ve come as women in construction, there’s still more to do—but we are stronger together.
